Love Poem: Love and the Romance of Their Lies

Love and the Romance of Their Lies

They will tell you that love will change your life
That just a little pinch of romance
Can make your spirit dance
And that your heart can reach a higher plain
Where nothing seems quite the same
They tell you love can change your life

But this is not my experience

And you may think you have been in love before
You may have stood before the light
And felt your heart become an opening door
And tell yourself that this is the one
And know in yourself your life has begun

This has been my experience

But romance and love are just a script
An easy Hollywood portrayed by the rich and famous
There in the tale of the fairy tale of the fairy tale
Where everything turns out well
And the merest smattering of romance
Changes the life of everyone

This is not “What Dreams May Come”
Nor the dream of “Pretty Woman”
It is more like the tale of “Dracula”
The end of “The Fisher King”
Really its reality is just a wish, just a dream

But this has been my experience

To believe in the books and the films
To turn your life into an orchestrated narrative
And expect that this is the life the way you want to live
Reaching the pinnacle of the joyous soul
Love and romance your only goal
And everything is just so perfect

This has not been my experience

But I have danced by sunlit inspiration
I have felt as if I could do anything
And life for love was about to become
And I have touched on the essence of being one
I have dreamed such a perfect dream
Been prepared and ready to give up everything

I have believed in words
And have trusted to their honesty
Opened the doorways of my heart
And stood naked in the presence of all am I
Seen the moment in the choice and deliberation
And let them loose in the arms of love

This has been my experience

And I cannot believe where this poem has brought me
And I cannot believe how wet these tears sting
Cannot stop these tearing moments
Or these shattered illusions
Of every hope and aspiration
Of this promise I was given which lied about everything

Every moment of love an untruth
Every dazzling beginning a falsehood
This human joke of dependency
Of the self aggrandizement of its petty idiosyncrasies
And no care for individuality
A mirror is all they want to see

For an easy agreement to prove their surety
And love, love is just a fake
Just a story to cover and replace
How mercenary is their cheap and empty compromise
Another easy façade to disguise their prostitution
In the romance of their lies

This has been my experience
