Life Mistakes

I could be a friend of yours; but I doubt I’ll ever be;
The water rose to high for us; we’ve too much history
     I could have loved you better; then I ever did;
    But you forgot now didn’t you; No thoughts to that you give.
You remember how I used you right; you should have gotten more;
But now I keep my goals in sight; for you’re more than was before.
     I could have been a lover; a man that you could trust;
     I’m not the man I use to be; when I only wanted lust.
I could have been a confidant; am I considered smart enough?
Do I lack the education; and my image’s harsh and rough?
     I could have been and would have been; but I see I never will;
     And for that I live heartbroken; it’s a biter tasting pill.
