Let Us Live, My Sweeting

Let’s pretend the world is made of flowers.
Let’s pretend the cottage eaves that spot
The greenest hills beneath the sun’s bright hot,
Are made to stand against unending hours.
Let’s pretend that Spring has made her nest,
And filled the air with sweetest things that roam;
Where past the slanted hills the rivers foam.
Let’s pretend that we are her sole guest!
Let’s pretend the chiming of the seas,
Whose rapture swelled in heartbeats echoes through
The morning’s quiet and complacent dew;
Let’s pretend, and fly against the breeze.
Let’s pretend the sky is made of cream,
Let’s pretend the world is just a dream,
And her fields where we flutter in between,
And when we go we’ll leave no cave unseen.
All this is made of softest things on earth;
Let’s pretend the world is made of mirth!
Let’s pretend the rose above you placed,
So firmly – gently - in your hair is wrapped.
When sunlight from its gem upon is traced
Down your cheek, and down, to where you napped.
Let’s pretend we clasp the stars in our hands,
And feel its resplendent warmth within our palm.
Let’s pretend! Let us dream of heaven’s lands,
Let us sleep, and sleep, until the world is calm.
