Love Poem: Lessons of Love At Any Age

Lessons of Love At Any Age

LESSONS OF LOVE AT ANY AGE

The lake was serene as a sleeping swan
Early evening and the town lights were coming on
There was snow on the ground
Having carpeted the rooftops and the rocks white

Snows embossed shadows on the hillsides
Still waters lapped the water’s edge
A stilted memory lies embedded in my mind
Flashing recollections of you swimming and laughing

You, my chosen one, professing love fled too quickly
You were my first love I said and I would love you forever
It will last longer than infinity, it was then I saw your eyes
That told me my love is young and not for old men

Now, overlooking the icy cold waters of a serene lake
in my stupor I saw the sign emblazoned in the sky
"April to December love affairs are not for everyone
the young do not possess hearts with compassion"

Jagged mountain peaks covered in white are sad along with me
The young don’t know age is dependable and trustworthy
She touched my heart but as youth does it flew away on a whim
Her parting left a sweet bitter taste in my mind

Teaching me a time honed adage, lost Love is pain at any age.
