Love Poem: Lead Your Heart

Lead Your Heart

From my early years, I was beholding to a three-word line.
It was a shirt-liner about love and other noble pursuits.
The highly appreciated counsel was, "Follow your heart".
Later in life, I chose to adhere to a different line.

The feeling of falling in love is a most exhilarating desire.
I must have fallen in love at least 20 times or more.
Sometimes the 'falls' found me landing undesirably,
filled with pain, disappointment, and questions.

There was one 'fall in love' that left an unforgettable
kiss and a hurting heart, but it did not leave me landing
on my feet. I fell in love and married the one who captured
and arrested me with her unforgettable smile.

I had my last fall in love when I was 20 years of age.
That fall did cause an amazing 'beat sensation' in my heart.
However, that emotional sensation had to be sanctioned by
my brain and by the guidance of God's teaching about love.

That fall found me landing on my feet saying, "I do" in
answer to the question of commitment to one person for life.
Fortunately, for 51 years, I've never had to say "I do" again.
It's no secret that the heart has to be taught to say, "No".

I chose to 'Not follow my heart', but to 'lead my heart'.
Following my heart had its qualities and aided me to a point.
But learning to lead my heart became a more superior pursuit.
I believe that God designed the heart to be led and not to lead.
