Love Poem: Lasting Crush

Lasting Crush

I had a crush that I adored.
She was my friend's sister.
One night on the porch swing,
I was lucky enough to kiss her.

I would flirt and tease,
Trying to let her know,
But if she had any interest,
I never got it to show.

Occasionally, we'd flirt,
But that's all we'd do.
I couldn't find my opening;
I had tried all I knew.

Eventually, over time,
We had drifted apart,
But that crush lived;
It's still in my heart.

It's been twenty years,
And I seen her today.
She still makes me nervous;
I wasn't sure what to say.

Then she tells me that
She had a crush on me
Back then and tried,
But her signs I didn't see.

We talked a little while
About life and how we've been,
And it felt to me the same
As it did way back then.

This time I took no chance;
I wasn't waiting on fate.
I came right out and asked
If I could take her on a date.

And wouldn't you know it,
She finally said yes to me.
After two decades of waiting,
Where this goes, we will see.
