Last I Remember

Last I remember, she said not to worry,
she would be right back, she said she would hurry.
She said she believed how sorry I was,
with a kiss, she swore her endless love.

Last I remember, her tears had dried,
she said sometimes, a woman just cried.
Last night, was forgotten-her words to me,
her words were mine and were forever to be.

So much has changed since she closed the door,
so much I can see I never say before.
On her hand, I thought she wore her ring,
but it was there on the floor along with my dreams.

Her closet was empty, her drawers were hallow,
her tears left a trail I timidly followed.
Their moisture so cold, their stains so dark,
they led to an image that shattered my heart.

Pictures and memories on our bed so still,
each one laid damp from her pain so real.
Some stained with kisses, her lips were wet,
Some stained with lipstick and deepest regrets.

Scraps of paper, her unfinished goodbyes,
for the first time, I realized even the strongest can cry.
Last I remember, the world was mine,
but she said she would be back for the very last time.
