Love Poem: I Would Go Back

I Would Go Back

There are some hearts that heal quickly
And some hearts that heal not at all
My heart was somewhere between them
But, oh, it was slow I recall

It was a simple beginning
"Would you care to dance?" was the phrase
"I would indeed," was the answer
The start of the halcyon days

Nights came and went like new satin
The moon meshed with jasmine soaked air
Youth fell away in a torrent
As I lost my self in her hair

Then came a morning in April
The morning my heart was to sink
She placed a finger on my lips
"Well it has been fun don't you think?"

She disappeared and took my youth
The sunrise was a dull flat grey
I heard no songbirds in the trees
The smell was traffic on the quay

I'd go back to that place and time
And take back that request to dance -
To erase that scar on my heart
That came from an ersatz romance
