I Started a Joke

I STARTED A JOKE

I started a joke in 1960
I asked her for a date
She accepted as she smiled a me
And I said to her, but wait

You act as if you don't know me
She told me I was mistaken
That was just a ploy, you see
'Cause I knew your heart was achin'

I wanted to see just how long
It would take you to swallow your pride
I realize now that was terribly wrong
I just wanted you by my side

But if you wanted me to ask you out
You never gave a hint
I'd go home and sit and pout
That's how my time was spent

My joke had just backfired on me
It really was not funny
I missed an opportunity
To make life a lot more sunny

Knowing all that I know now
I was such a fool
I won her heart, I don't know how
This gorgeous girl from school

She's now my wife, we have two kids
Times are funny after all
My life is certainly not on the skids
But it was a very close call
