I Remember Our First Hello

This world if full of far too many goodbyes.
Not enough kindness and too many lies.
Is this what my poor life has come to again,
praying to say hello as I glare into your eyes.
Every now and then, I whisper an “amen”
when I think of the day when we first met-
a crisp Autumn day, I hold not one regret.

For in that moment I knew you were unique,
though love was something I never did seek.
One kind greeting from you and I was sold,
I could not speak, and my knees got weak.
Eventually you took me, to have and to hold.
in the morn we used say hello with a kiss-
O, beloved, it’s those “good mornings” I miss.

With one welcome from you I was found,
you gave me your hand and I stuck around.
It was the kismet of all fates that October,
for I knew not our love would be renowned.
You thought, “man, I just want to hold her,"
and we sat and talked all through the night
without a care nor a worry ever in sight.

The force felt in the very first hello we said
was what fed us as we began to break bread.
The magnetism and potency of our emotions
didn’t give us anxiety but passion instead.
We grew into a marriage of deep devotion
and me not knowing how to let you go-
for on your deathbed I remember our first hello….
