Love Poem: I Met Her

I Met Her

I met her in a place unfettered by the world
A secret place, a place where no one would dare judge
For we were all walking the same path
But soon there would be tension, yes people would bear a grudge

It started innocuously, little whispers meant to cast doubt
Little assaults not meant to kill, merely to maim
That soon passed as the jealousy mounted and took flight
Every whip and lash hit its mark, yes they hit her - their aim

Soon she doubted me, she feared the rumours too
She feared the outlandish notion of finding love
First believing in it with a wink, she turned to being grim and weary
Her words grew cold and few, we no longer fitted snug as a glove

The nights grew long, the silence grew palpable
Even my words waned, as I felt weak with dread
I did not want to believe that the woman I love wavered
As it became ever more apparent in every word that she said

She would not speak to me or speak of me
Instead, she briefed me about her life
Her time, her encounters with other people, her wishes; her
There was no longer a we or an us, there was a her and I, and it cut like a serrated knife

I wondered whether she could ever love me again
Whether she could ever look at me with that crimson smile
Whether I'd ever be able to once again swim in the ocean of her eyes
That is all I live for, a spark; for that I will walk the mile

And after all is said and our fates decided
I will wade on the beaches of her bosom and bay
I will be still, waiting unmoved for her to be my keeper; not only to say I met her
For we are and I am nothing without her, that I must undoubtedly convey
