Love Poem: I Love You

I Love You

I came a long way to see you today, in the deep of winter, I found your headstone- and brushed away the frozen snow with my mitten, to reveal just the word- MOTHER, and I whispered, I love you Mom, I miss you. I need only close my eyes to recall the day, we stood at the side of the street so long ago and in slow motion Susan disappeared- under the wheels of a passing truck, her blood soaking the white snow. You were holding my hand so tight- it hurt, but it was your screaming that stays with me, I hear it every night . . . We had a special bond because of that, no one could ever understand the depth of our love- the shared sorrow and pain, the visual of what we saw. When you saw me sad, you held my hand, when my baby died, you held my hand when my husband died, you held my hand. And when Dad died, I held your hand- when you got sick, I held your hand, when you were taking your last breath- I held your hand. And by some miracle- in that last gasp of life, you opened your eyes and looked at me, and said as clear as an azure sky, I love you . . . . Just three little words- that I hold in my heart like a precious gift given. ___________________________ March 13, 2017 Verse/I Love You Copyright Protected, ID 884156 "An Expression of Love" Contest
