I Cannot Teach You How To Love

I cannot teach you how to love
There is no subject but us
And there is no discipline.
If I say give that is a command
And if it is not spontaneous it is not love again.
You must come willing
And climb the hills like the moon
With your belly sweet with fire.
You must bring the fragrance of fresh spices
That mountain use to cover
Its curving nakedness.
And you must lie still like a moth on the shade
Waiting to be devoured
As the sacrifice of total surrender.
I cannot teach you how to love
Love is a gift
A surrender of our best
A choice to become
Whatsoever my pleasure be.
The fear is not in me, dear child
It is you
The spell has cast nothing out.
I cannot teach you how to love.
