I Am His Forever Friend

Had not seen Joe since he got back to town
Heard from other locals he was decidedly down
Unsure what happened, but things looked a bit bleak
Found him at the park, where I took a peek.

Saw he was vulnerable, downcast, maybe a bit sad.
Last time I’d seen him I had been a bit of a cad.
Would we still be friends? Could he forgive me?
I decided to approach him rather cautiously.

He did not turn or look, he was deep in his grief.
I knew something had happened, and it was not brief.
I put a hand on his shoulder and said “I’m here for you.”
He glanced at me briefly, and I knew what to do.

I sat next to him and gave him time to think.
His face was sad, and a little bit pink.
He began to talk, and his tale was one of woe.
I listened without comment, letting him know.

I am here for him always, forever his friend.
It seemed to be enough, for ears to lend.
I offered no solutions, just listened away.
I know that for me I had a much better day.
