Love Poem: Honey I'M Home

Honey I'M Home

I still walk in the door, saying, “Honey, I’m home”
Even though it has been fifteen years I am on my own
I still expect to hear, “Sweetie, I’ll be right there”
Before fixing a TV dinner and eating alone in my chair

She smiles down upon me from her portrait on the wall
The sweet smell of her perfume I can perfectly recall
Her garden out back, is now just weeds that are overgrown
And I still walk in the door, saying, “Honey, I’m home”

I still go to bed each night turning down the covers on her side
My pillow case is stained from the tears that I have cried
I keep an extra blanket because she was always getting cold
I never expected that I would be the one to grow old

The nights are far too quiet for me to simply fall asleep
I miss her frozen toes being pressed against my feet
I’ve told everyone I’m fine – but they all know that I have lied
I still go to bed each night turning down the covers on her side

I’m just counting down my days until I can see her once again
If the heavenly gates are opened to me we will have a reunion
I will see her smiling face as soon as the angel’s trumpets are blown
And finally, it will mean something again, saying, “Honey, I’m home”
