Love Poem: Here

Here

So you’re sitting across the table from me, staring me down with loaded eyes.
Did you ever think it would come to this?
Or did you forget, like me, that it wasn’t ever that good.
I warned you I was trouble from the very start
You knew that I would only break your heart.
Then why are holding the gun against my head? Shooting bullets of blame and angry shame
when there’s love instead.
“Are you okay?” And you say, “Fine”
I see we’re still hiding and lying about that.
You think that I’m bitter and resentment is strong
But I’m looking at you now and all I feel is patient
I told you; you know. So why are we here?
Are you expecting a sorry or some stupid lullaby?
Would you like a love song about ‘the one that got away?’
We’ve had our bad times and we’ve let them fly
But I have never told you an outright lie.
Why should I start?
There’s a remedy and we know it. We know it but we hate it
Say goodbye, part ways; you know the deal just say it.
Pretend it never happened, pretend we never were
Pretend I never wronged you by saying those words.
When you said ‘I love you’ and I said, ‘Why, thank you.’
Let’s pretend, that we never got to here.
