Love Poem: Heart Wood

Heart Wood

This is good heart wood
I cried a little when the fire started
  Smoke was in my eyes

  It burns as it should
Here and there the sparks have darted
  It caught me by surprise

  I caught a sparkle
And felt in a flash the singe of flesh
  Cinders are not starry tears

  The ember shows its mettle
Now the flames are still. Words mesh
  The ash of our fears

  But I love the tree
Alright that lay down its life in flame
  To yield the great wood

  My love would not see
It hurt again, no ax on the bitten frame
  This heart wood is good.
