Love Poem: Headphones

Headphones

My heart is a pair of tangled headphones
The music still plays but the melody is twisted
All I do is try to unravel the notes
And understand the lyrics
But I can’t because someone has tangled my headphones
Before it was just a matter of pressing play
But now it’s so much more complicated
See you’ve taken the melodies and made them hard to find
You’ve caused me to work for the music
To work for the songs
The lyrics are still sweet but they’re now complicated
The notes are still soft but they’re now sharp
Each one cuts like paper
Gently
Overtime I’ll bleed out
I’ll bleed melodic blood that drips in 4/4 time
I’ll live by the music
For those songs
The ones you rewrote and complicated
And I’ll die by the music
With a soft smile I will embrace each little pain
Because with each wound I’m reminded
That you’re the one who did this
You disrupted my connection to the music
You changed my song
The melodies sound different now
The lyrics don’t taste the same
Sweeter maybe
You enhanced my senses when you took one headphone
To listen to my song
I’m glad you did
Listen to my song
I think you even liked it
But then you took my senses back
When you gave me back my headphones
