Happiness and Sadness

Happiness and sadness
Happiness and sadness: the yin and yang of life;
Sunshine in the heart, a bouncy beat to life.
And guts-ache, emptiness, leaden paralysis of mind.
They come, they go, the bipolar of existence; or
Are they the boundaries of being?

Pain of grief lies at my very core; the
Emptiness of loss a gnawing hunger deep inside.
Thoughts of you wear a barren path to hope;
And finding nothing to feed on, drive out happiness
Like scavenging mongrels in a wasteland.

Yet my foolish spirit resists and keeps a glowing
Ember of memory, luring thoughts to tread their well
Worn paths. So the cycle continues, like the seasons’
Natural progression denied Spring and Summer, to
Leave only Winter’s cold despair and decay of Autumn.

In time, grief exhausts its winter’s store; Nature
Asserts the natural order of things, and Spring brings
Renewal and blossoming of happiness. But still, in
The heat of a new Summer, the memory of you
Brings the bitter-sweet polarity of love.
