Love Poem: Gone
Ralph Mason Avatar

Gone

too far gone
the scales never lie
I turned an ear
and carried my babe
where the wind howls
and faces crack

my hair, shorn to the skin
bares no grudge
like me, it bends to the need

I replay our first act
the rub of your dimpled collar
the warmth
yes, the warmth was comfort
where none was ever found

your gentle mind
abused but
never doubting
became my pillar
my thorny steed

the last beam marked your
departure
the back of your head
bobbing like a fire fly
then darkness
