Love Poem: Going Steady

Going Steady

"Sherry will go with you, if you ask",
A Seventh grade girl whispered to me
"Go where?", I asked, sensing a new task
She smiled and said, "Go steady silly!"

"Oh", I said, not sure what that meant
Girls were such a daunting endeavor
Steady sounded like a stable event
But how do we do it together?

Now in this friendship with a twist
I felt much more than a little naive
Her "Sherry" bracelet on my wrist
Secretly covered up with my sleave

One time she told me on the phone
She had a new one piece bathing suit
"Which piece I asked" ,my mind fairly blown
She then accused me of trying to be cute

Mom by chance the bracelet did see
She said, "You're too young for this,"
"Break it up and don't say it was me."
So I did before we had a first kiss

After that our love had no chance
We'd see each other but not speak
I felt bad about my first romance
We went steady almost a whole week!
