Love Poem: Gaslight Me

Gaslight Me

Gaslight me, baby.

I don't want to hear the truth. Tell me you love me. Say you need me. Promise you'll never leave me. Convince me you think I hung, not just the moon, but the sun and stars as well. Delude me into believing that for you the sex was mind-blowing, that I was enough. Lie to me, sweetheart. Force me to accept that your wedding vows were not meaningless utterances, but absolute truths.

And girl, while you're at it, assure me that the world is at peace. That war, hatred, prejudice and poverty are no more. Sell me on a revisionist historian's view that Hitler was a leper messiah, that six millions Jews did not perish after all, that Nazism is just another benign, political ideology. Hook me on the notion that all the children of the world have full bellies, that homelessness has been eradicated, and that all people on planet earth love one another unconditionally.

Brainwash me into embracing the cliche that love is not a lie and that forever still exists. Make a believer out of me by holding me in your arms so tight that I gasp for air. Sway my mind and heart into accepting that our meeting was not by mere chance, but serendipity. Persuade me. Induce me. Deceive me. But whatever you do, my love, don't dare tell me the truth. Please, I beg, don't ever let me hear you say

you're

leaving

me

Let me live the lie another day. I can bear the delusion, if permitted the illusion.

Gaslight me, baby.
