Free

I clipped your wings,a mortal sin
because I feared that you would flee.
I was desparately afraid that if you left,
you would never again return to me.

I kept you surrounded day and night
by my cage of jealousy and fear.
Much like a jailbird,you were a prisoner
unable to breathe in the fresh air.

Then one day your feathers drooped
and you would no longer sing.
I saw your weakening sadness
and my heart began to sting.

Suddenly,I realized the sad truth,
a bird of your magnitude must soar.
The cage, the clipped wings were of no use,
you must be free to explore.

So you spread those elegant wings
and just like that you were free.
You never even bothered to look back,
just glided above the old oak tree.

Part of me still wants you here,
singing so beautifully ,
but I know in my heart,
yours is a soul that must be free.

Maybe as years pass,
then you'll decide to come back to me.
You'll sail gleefully into my arms,
and at last we'll both be free.
