Four Kinds of Lonely

There’re four kinds of lonely, and I know them all,
One of them’s summer, and one of them’s fall,
One of them’s winter, and one of them’s spring—
There’re four kinds of lonely, to each one I sing.

In spring-time I think of that year when we met,
In summer I think how you hadn’t left yet,
In autumn I think how you left like the leaves,
In winter I hear you when wind hits the eaves.

In spring-time I look at those flowers you grew,
In summer I walk through the woods we once knew,
In autumn I miss you, and I always will,
In winter I stand by your stone in the chill.
