Forget - Me - Not

Awakened by Hyacinthoides’ bell,
the riverside carpet starts to swell
as tiny blooms; hues like skies;
wink open nephophilic eyes,
to gaze where roving lovers, hover;
flowers to gift to one another.

Legend says, in days of old,
a knight in armour; strong and bold;
walking with his maiden fair,
picked a bouquet to adorn her hair,
his foot slipped on that squelchy bank
and weighted down he quickly sank.

As he threw those blossoms from the pool,
she caught them in her reticule,
and raced towards the waters edge,
where he; drowning; gave his lovers pledge.
With a final bubbling, “forget - me - not,”
those flowers became a love mascot.
