Food For the Soul

A child may be very well fed,
but if she is deprived of love,
she will go hungry to her bed
as she cries to the Lord above.
This hunger, not often heard of,
is as real as a lack of food,
when love has managed to elude.
Pity the poor, mother-less child
on whom misfortune has been piled.

When you see her sitting alone
you may feel a stab of concern
unless you have a heart of stone.
You will stay and try to discern
and feel sympathy when you learn
this child has been deprived
from the very first hour she arrived
on this inhospitable Earth.
Without love she hasn’t thrived
for her mother died at her birth.
