Falling In Love On a Long Distance Bus

He’d just settled in his seat
behind, a child made a fuss,
the noisy charter almost full
on the Greyhound bus.

He looked up from his magazine
to see her standing there,
he thought she looked familiar
but couldn’t place when or where.

She was more elegant than beautiful,
he moved and she sat down,
her eyes were green as emeralds,
her hair was golden brown.

He found he couldn’t speak at first
so she thanked him pleasantly,
he asked her destination,
she smiled, “Where the wind takes me”.

Said he was on his way up north,
had been a drifter all his life,
was about to settle down
with a brand new wife.

She said she had been a fool,
some guy cheated, let her down,
she decided to just walk away,
a new life in some small town.

As the miles drew them closer
it was as if they knew,
these moments were for them to share
this time would have to do.

They crept into each other’s hearts
as they talked all through the night
about hopes, dreams, promises
until dawn’s morning light.

She looked at him with teary eyes,
he kissed her long and slow,
“I wish things were different
I don’t want to let you go.”

Then he drew her close again,
waves of sadness crossed his face,
they knew unfortunately they ‘d met
the wrong time in the wrong place.”

She watched them through the window,
his backward glance as they walked away,
falling in love on a Greyhound bus,
she still thinks of him today.

She knew she’d not forget him,
love between the two had grown,
but he had disembarked to his destiny,
she had stayed on board to her own.
