Don't Set Me Free and Then Cry For Me

Don't set me free and then cry for me
I'm your precious dove; think before
Springing me from the cage, lest you feel
            the debilitating sting of regret.

Don't set me free and then cry for me
I am but a gust of wind that blows
only in one direction, my darling
You're behind me, not in front.

Don't set me free and then cry for me
To do so is to give me wings to fly
to the ends of the earth, so far out of sight
             you'll never again reach me.

Don't set me free and then cry for me
Make your decision wisely, for before
you blow a kiss goodbye, I've already
crossed a rubicon of no return.

    I mean this in earnest, do not set me free;
don't ever release me. If you do, I'll vanish
for all eternity. You see, I am time itself.
I couldn't sit idle and wait for you if I tried.
