Conquered, Part III

...And come the day she had free reign, provided she not leave,
no heavy tasks upon her, she had worked more while still free.
She explored the whole of the keep, she ready his ancient books,
went down to the kitchen and gossiped freely with the cooks.
She recognized this wasn’t what she thought had been in store,
and honestly, after some time, she began to feel bored.

She spoke to Geren one evening, after the lust was done,
“What shall I do in the day time, beneath the brilliant sun?”
He looked at her as if confused, and said, “I do now know.
I claimed you for the nighttime things, not cook, or my crops sow.
I guess you can do as you please, if you don’t’ leave the grounds,”
and with that, shrugged again and left, and his words did astound.
He would make her do nothing but lay with him in his bed?
Were not slaves bound to crushing lives, was that not what folks said?
Had she been claimed by the one man who wasn’t harsh of cruel?
But she supposed it was a gift, her master was a fool.

So she just went about her life, did things she’d done before,
the only major difference was at night she played the whore.
She’d make grass wreaths, she’d help the cooks, she’d knit things of sheep’s wool,
she’d fashioned kites to sail the breeze to keep her hours full,
she had no fear of hunger here, no threat of famine days,
the whole things would’ve been idea is she weren’t his love-slave.
Mostly Geren left her alone, though sometimes she would see
him watching her was a lost look, then smile soft and fleet.
She couldn’t tell why he did this, it was no look of lust,
was it a good thing, who could tell? She couldn’t count on trust.
She’d spread flowers on untilled ground, bought color to the place,
decorate for the holidays, to liven up the space,
she’d help the peasants stomp down grapes to lay in the year’s wing,
she went and found so many things to help her pass the time,
it wasn’t that bad of a life for one expecting hell,
but she feared it over when her belly began to swell.

She had been half-expecting it, but pushed away the fear,
feeling that if it happened she would not be leaving here,
that her children would be born slaves, and bound to this estate,
why had to gods led her to this? To be tired to this fate?
When Geren first noticed this, he gave her a wide smile,
said, “Let’s go to my chambers and celebrate a while.”
