Love Poem: Change of Venue

Change of Venue

on
this
lovely day
birds singing
more than usual
the sky crystal clear
‘twas a most glorious day
one we’d never forget to be thankful
for the bountiful gifts of life

just mailed all the invites
celebrating this august
married 50 years

rushing home to show off
the new dress she bought
when out the patio door
she thinks she sees
his collapsed body
in the backyard
leaps to the rescue
only to find him
cold and stiff
tears of grief
so explode
that her heart
cannot contain

their bodies were
found crisscrossed
amidst their
prized rose beds
as hand in hand
they marched
through the arches
of heaven’s gate
