Love Poem: Cardinal Killer

Cardinal Killer

Warm cuddle curled
Up next to me
Cardinal killer
Jasmine
Your human was six
When she asked
For a Calico
Next day
A white black and gold ball of love
Joined our family
Full grown
In cat years at least
One year older than
The one you've been
Sweet loving companion to
And now her daughter, too
Never a mouse in the house where
You lived
That crimson clump of feathers
You left on my doorstep
My favorite team's mascot
Easy prey, I guess, for one
Sporting the colors of their Super Bowl
Nemesis
I forgave you then... now... always
My heart breaks
Last night of my visit I always spend
Holding you
She's 22... so you're over 100
I'm 63 and starting to creak
Hurts to watch you move
But you still eat, use your litter box
And do the best thing you do
Cuddle and purr pure love
Your soul I will hold onto
With this poem
From my heart
Forever
