Love Poem: Butterflies

Butterflies

Love flits on the wings of butterflies
Here one moment and the next gone
Only lingering enough to see its beauty
Then away again to visit another
Many a day I have spent wishing
Wishing that I had not taken it for granted
Praying it would stay awhile longer
Basking in its warming glow
But it wasn't meant to be for long
It gives me only time thinking
Thinking that I could change what I can't
Giving me only enough to say good-bye
With tears of longing
I watch it slowly flutter from my hand
Waving with solemnity of one who hates
Hates that it could not stay and be my ray of sunshine
In a dark and desperate world
Tears of solitude bathe my desperate face
Grasping for it and reaching for it
It slips through my fingers like sand
And escapes into unearthly freedom
Although I am angry, I am grateful
Not many are visited by the true butterfly
Only its cousin who spreads himself thin
I am one of the lucky few
Even living with the regret of knowing
Knowing the one I will love forever leaves me
They are truly the one I will remember
And my heart is split in two as they take half
My soul is rendered useless
Because only half is present
It cannot be reunited unless
Unless my only true love that is gone gives it back
Until then, I simply wait while shedding tears of regret
Taking advantage of the time I had was never accomplished
It was wasted on feeble dreams
Living with the pain is unbearable
Letting them go is not an option
They stay forever even though they are gone
There is no other and never will be
Moving on is impossible
Others wish to look for the butterfly with me
I can't
I simply wait until it returns on the shoulder of my lover
Until that day all I do is wait
No one else entices me like they do
No one else can touch me but them
But living with the fact that those hands can never touch again
I can't do it
So I slip into a dead slumber
Eternally waiting for the one who can bring me back to life...
