Love Poem: Between the Dragons

Between the Dragons

“The Gods have been most cruel”
Said the old man to me
Standing inside the sun’s light
Casting a long shadow
Over barren rocks
“Most cruel to you”

“Most cruel” I echoed
Tugging at my chains
That hold me fast between my twin desires
The Dragons trying to splice my body
Even as they seek to rend my heart in two
And pull apart my soul
To share me between them equally

I look as the old man does to you I look as the old man does to you
To see you waiting without To see you waiting within
As you look back at me with your eyes so sad As you look back at me
A little tired and full or yearnings With your head held high
Like my own Full of pride
And I strain against my chains With the knowledge we are right
Seeking to touch you That we are safe from ourselves
To hold you Sheltered from our needs
Kiss you Our screaming desires
Breathe you Shielded by our honour

But the Dragon pulls me back
			                      To tighten the chains
			                       Leaving me gasping for breath
Unable to see you in my eyes
			                       But knowing you are there
			                       In my heart
			                       Just beyond my reach
