Before You Were Dad

Before You Were Dad

Everything your father knows
The man he has become
It was all decided years ago
When he learned to be a son
So if it seems his children
Have him underneath their thumb
It's just what he thought life should be
Back when he was young
He doesn't think that it should hurt
Learning right from wrong
And he doesn't want his kids to see
Him blow up like a bomb
He never tries to undermine
The love they share with mom
He knows if he can’t compromise
He should try to get along
A father’s love can not be taught
By words used in a poem
It’s all the things you realize
You took when you left home
And whether he was there or not
Won’t change what you've become
Because even perfect fathers
Can still sacrifice their son
