Barren Branches

Barren Branches

She had always wept, this Willow
with joy, drooping to touch pond’s edge
her children hugged her branches, her trunk their pillow
soft touch of barefoot joy upon her branches
youth’s never lasting song – forever’s pledge
for lover’s - they must always take their chances
as memories of toes and bark grow dimmer
the dearth of joy and laughter’s silent dredge
cold withering of branches growing slimmer
leafless wings long past their ancient fledge
