An Incomplete Love Story

I know sadness
it comes each day without my consent
and holds me before its easel
where it paints tears streaming down my face
beneath fading moons and portraits of yesterdays
that hang in the dim lit gallery of my soul
where no one comes but the ghostly shadow of you

For love were you and I on the canvas of time
with warm breezes and light footsteps
we kissed among the fragrant flowers
that wrapped around our hearts with glorious scents
we danced in twilight during setting suns
and held hands in the rush of tide
where are feet submerged
we made love in soft splayed light in meadows
where streams rippled in the distance
and birds sang on the farthest hills

but, hate took you away
and left misty eyes and outstretched arms
and an unmeasurable space between

for I am a common man
unknown to the glittering culture
of glowing jewels and flowing dresses
that surrounds your life with its cupped hands

the words "your not worthy"
echo still in my head
when your father pulled you away without remorse
to leave me bleeding on the sword of my desire
that he thrust through our hearts
with his old cold merciless rigid statement of classes

one day, I will find you again
until then
I'll know sadness...
