Abandoned

ABANDONED
Yesterday, roaming deep in the countryside, I came upon a house. Deserted, derelict, long forgotten The garden, neglected, Left to nature’s own devices. I wandered through the waist-high grass And there, tucked away in a corner, A greenhouse. Or the remains of one. A few lonely panes of glass, Clinging resolutely to the rotting timber. Pots that once nurtured new life, Ditched among the brambles and the ivy. And suddenly I felt a wave of melancholy. For this was me, all those years ago In another lifetime. Life after you and me. I thought our love would blossom in the sun. Would grow, one shoot today, Another tomorrow … And tomorrow …. and tomorrow. But one day the glass began to shatter; A pane here, a pane there. The structure began to disintegrate; The very foundation collapsed. And our love was discarded Amongst the brambles and the ivy 15th June 2020 Thesaurus - Abandon or Abandoned contest Sponsor - Dear Heart
