Love Poem: A Look of Robert Mitchum

A Look of Robert Mitchum

A soldier marched towards me ~ so tall and straight just like a tree
In his military boots his height exceeded well over six foot three
For many years I’d had a yearning, a penchant for the military
A look of Robert Mitchum; well that’s what finally did it for me
Those come to bed eyes of sparkly blue
I was hooked, lined and sinkered before I knew
He asked me my name ~ no voice could I do
My legs turned to gel as I whispered ‘Lindy Lou’
My lungs had no breath as I slid to the floor
I had died, gone to heaven in his arms forevermore
Gently opening my eyelids to the bluest eyes I ever saw
He scooped me up into his arms true love just oozed from every pore

My face so moist with many tears my soldier is no longer here
And then I spot upon the floor his REME* cap of black and red
REME suit on hanger hung ~ resplendent in birthday suit instead
His clefted chin and eyes of blue not Robert M but my darling Ted
Upon a tray a birthday treat from Ted to me was breakfast in bed

'twas our last night together then he would be gone
Our forbidden love so strong like in a passionate love song
But I was betrothed to Tom
~~ how could I have got it so wrong ~~

After so many years my love has survived
But now you are gone and inside I died
Just days after bidding our final goodbye
                                       you died
                                  killed in action
                             in nineteen forty five
oh why ~ oh how ~ did I survive...
