A Cardinal Now Calls Out Through the Trees

A cardinal now calls out through the trees,
Hoping its lonely presence will be known,
As the branches slowly sway in the breeze.

The bird sings with the hope that one of these
Days it will no longer sing on its own–
A cardinal now calls out through the trees.

Over a grassy field, it flies with ease,
And comes to rest near a creek on a stone;
As the branches slowly sway in the breeze.

Up in a nearby elm tree, the bird sees
A mate to keep it from being alone–
A cardinal now calls out through the trees.

The surface of the lakes begin to freeze,
And they wait for their young to be full-grown;
As the branches slowly sway in the breeze.

They watch as the last of their young now flees,
And all their children from the nest have flown.
A cardinal now calls out through the trees,
As the branches slowly sway in the breeze.
