What Could'Ve Been

Oh, how shattered
Torn and tattered
And how the pieces bleed
One by one, dying of need

The heart burns
But never learns
That after the ashes scatter
Nothing else seems to matter

The tears that stain my pillow
Serve to let me know
That love slipped through my fingers
And how my heart now lingers

Over this pain, this heartache
This hurt, this heartbreak
Sanity dangling by a thread
Hating these tears I shed

Needing to say good-bye
To a love that was a lie
Dear heart, don't give in
Given another lifetime you'll mend

The heart will hurt so deep inside
Still loving a memory that just won't die
Love can't thrive on what - if's and should've beens
But, still, it cries for what could've been
