Love Poem: Under the Pier I

Under the Pier I

I didn't mean it ...
You were everything, didn't you know??
Didn't I show you in a thousand little ways?
(At least as many sizable ones) ...

But I can't take it back, not now ... not ever
I remember standing on this spot - the very same
Our first kiss ... your hair lit by carnival lights
The gibbous moon cutting wave-tops to shards

Us, barefoot in the sand under the pier
I dreamed so many things in that moment, wondrous
But never this ... never such horror
          Blue police lights spinning ...

Dancing on the pilings like phantom faces
Gulls cackling as they pull you from the seaweed
     Eyes reflecting the moon ...
But not ... life.
