Love Poem: Near the End

Near the End

I just passed the corner where for years I used to turn. It always makes me smile when I recall
roaring down that old dirt road, knowing…near the end…you’d be waiting, just inside the door,
All dressed up so pretty, knowing I was on my way to pick you up and take you into town.
First we’d scoop the loop awhile…then we’d see a movie. What I’d give to make that run once more.

That went on for several months then - after graduation - we made plans to marry in the fall.
But like so many other fellas, I was called to war, and everything we’d planned was put on hold.
At first your letters came in droves - then they tapered off. The final few were laced with tiny clues,
Saying our relationship was very…near the end…I fin’ly grasped what I was being told.

Loneliness is powerful, and absence stokes the embers that smolder in a long-neglected heart.
Countless fools have left their loved ones floundering for affection, leaving them exposed to those who prey,
Searching for the weaker souls who fin’ly….near the end….falter from their need for being held.
Nothing done by email, or a cell phone, can replace a hug from those we love who’re far away.

Having learned the hard way, I can guarantee you this…I’ll never move away from Mom and Dad.
Doesn’t matter what it means, I’ll always live close by, so - when at last their final race is run -
I, at least, will be there…to remind them…near the end…I’ve always loved them both with all my heart,
And they will know, without a doubt, I’m glad that they’re my folks, and so extremely proud to be their son.
